Graduate Admissions
General Admission Requirements :
Initial correspondence on admission should be addressed to the Graduate School, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, 20742 (301-405-1974). The application packet from the Graduate School provides information on all application procedures. Applicants applying for financial assistance are advised that early application increases the chances for receiving financial aid. It is important for students to comply with all admission requirements noted in the Graduate School Admission Booklet. If these are not followed, the processing will be unduly delayed. Minimum Requirements for Graduate Students:
- Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to apply to the Master's Program.
- Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 to apply to the Doctoral Program.
- Applicants with lower GPA's may be considered and accepted in a provisional basis if other indicators of ability are exceptional (letters of recommendation, GRE scores, prior experience ...).
- Applicants should carefully consider and select one of the department's six division for the focus of their study.
- GRE is required with scores of at least 650 in the quantitative and analytical parts.
- Applicants with lower GPA's and/or GRE’s may be considered and accepted in a provisional basis if other indicators of ability are exceptional (letters of recommendation, prior experience ...).

Financial Assistance:
Financial support for graduate students is available in various forms. It may include remission of tuition fees, through teaching assistantships, research assistantships, the work-study program, and University and state fellowships.
Departmental teaching assistantships, which are usually half-time appointments, are available for full-time graduate students. Research assistantships provide students with the opportunity to work on research projects supervised by the civil engineering faculty. Stipends for teaching and research assistantships are in addition to remission of tuition fees.
