On Thursday, March 13, 2014, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering Research Professor Gerald Galloway addressed the national security impacts of climate change before the Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change on Capitol Hill.

A retired U.S. Army brigadier general, Galloway was one of three military leaders invited to give expert insights on the topic. He was joined by retired Brigadier General Stephen Cheney, Chief Executive Officer of the American Security Project, and former Captain Jon Gensler, a Cambridge Leadership Associates consultant.

Each of the three discussed how climate change will act as a “threat multiplier” in the most volatile regions and will stress supplies and access to military installations around the world. Additionally, the Task Force explored how today’s military leaders are already taking steps to prepare for the enhanced security threat posed by climate change.

The event was live-streamed by ClimateNexus and is archived on the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce website.

Founded in January 2014, the Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change focuses on drawing congressional and public attention to climate change and developing effective policy responses to this urgent challenge. The current co-chairs are Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Rep. Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.).
