His research is conducted within NEXTOR, the FAA Consortium in Aviation Operations Research. His research interests are in algorithms for air traffic management. Jones received a research stipend from the FAA's Graduate Research Award Program on Public-Sector Aviation Issues during the 2012-2013 academic year. He is advised by Associate Professor David Lovell (CEE/ISR).

Jones receives a WINFORMS trophy and honorarium to attend the annual INFORMS conference in November 2014 in San Francisco.
