Analysis of the State of Maryland's potential participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative

Dr. Steven A. Gabriel (Civil & Env. Eng.) and Dr. Matthias Ruth (Public Policy and Civil & Env. Eng.) have recently won a $ 371,487 project funded by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to analyze the State of Maryland's potential participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). RGGI is a collaborative program by Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic States to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, a greenhouse gas associated with global warming. This work is through the Center for Integrative Environmental Research at the University and involves as subcontractors, The Johns Hopkins University, Resources for the Future, and Towson University. Dr. Gabriel and the rest of the team will be responsible for submitting a final report to the State legislature advising them on Maryland’s potential participation in RGGI as well as the positive and negative impacts based on analysis of engineering economic models, stakeholder inputs, and other sources.
